GENERAL ELECTION.

A LIVELY WOMTN'S MEETING.

IPEESS ASSOCIATION'] AUCKLAND, November 7. A meeting advertised for women

electors only was held in St. George's

Hall, Grey Lynn, last night, and drew i a full house. Three policemen were * stationed at the door to prevent the » entry of any of the" masculine sex. Mrs V Nicoll, who had convened the meeting I to express her views on the Te Orangi •^ Home incident and the St. Helens Hospital, said with regard to Te .Orangi she did not blame the Minister or the heads of the departments, who did not know what was going on. Mrs Nicoll had not got much 'further till the meeting was in a state of disorder. One woman, standing on the seat, demanded to be heard, while two hundred women were on their feet at one

time, many interjecting/ and clamoring

for a hearing. ' Mrs Nicoll moved, "That the present matron of Te Orangi

Home is not a fit and proper person to •'"teW that office, and we call upon the Government to dismiss her," By this time nearly the whole audience were "standing. Mrs Gibson mounted the stage and moved, "That this meeting has every confidence that on the completion of the Te Orangi Home buildings the Minister for Education will

carry out the recommendations in Mr Bishop's report, and make the necessary improvements." Fully half those present voted for the amendment, and only one or two hands were shown against it. Instead of declaring the amendment carried Mrs Nicoll put her motion, and the voting being about even she -declared the motion carried.

Cheers for Mr Fowlds and counter cheers for Mr Nicholson were lustily .given, and the meeting dispersed.
