BALLARAT BAND CONTEST

MELBOURNE, October 24.
Great interest was taken in the A grade contests at the Ballarat Band Contest. First honors wont to the Collingwood (Victoria) Band, Newton (New South Wales) second, and Ballarat City third. Kaikorai had to be content with sixth place, the Inverell and Prout's (Ballarat) bands filling fourth and fifth places respectively.

A correspondent states that the Opposition are freely making charges of "graft" against the Government. Sir Wilfrid Laurier. preserves a scornful silence, though considerable excitement bad been occasioned by the allegation of gross corruption connected with the construction of the trans-Con-tinental railway.
