EMPIRE DAY.

THE UNION JACK

LPEEBS ASSOCIATION.] LONDON, May 21. In view of the largely increased celebrations being arranged for Empire Day Mr Asquith is criticised in many quarters for refusing the Government's official recognition of the holiday. In the House Captain Craig (member for East Devon) proposed to introduce a Bill providing for the display of the Union Jack on certain occasions in the United Kingdom, and, more particularly, on Empire Day, and hoisting it on national schools in Ireland, where a majority of parents, children and managers acquiesced. Nationalists forced a division for leave to introduce the Bill. Leave was refused by 156 to 88. On the division Mr Asquith left the House, and the rest of the Government | and many Ministerialists abstained from voting. (Received May 22, 9 a.m.) LONDON, May 21. It is expected that 6£ million children will parade on Empire day, nearly three million in the Motherland.
