EGMONT COUNTY COUNCIL

The monthly aneeting was held on 'April 10; present— Crs Ml Fleming (chairman), E. MaxweU, W. C. Dudley, K. Warner, A. B. Cdffin, S. CampbeU, and J- ConagLen. CORRESPONDENCE. From Haw«era Hospital Board, stating that the rate is^od in £100 valuation, which is a reduction of Id. From Public 'trustee, forwarding a portion of the mafcive rates, and deol ; ning to pay the balance.— The Clerk said that be was making arrangements with come of the anativas for collection of some xates which the Trustee declined to pay.— Cr Dudley said it did not seem fair that a number of (natives should be let off and white men summoned. , Fiom Awatuna Co-operative Dairy Company asking the Council to gravel portion 'of the road abutting on the creamery at Taungatara. — Councillors said if the $oad were gravelled for one creamery it would be wanted for others, consequently no action was taken. From, Booth, SlcDomald and* Co., forwarding account- for crusher plant. — It was noticed that they Bad. charged the Council ior cost of erection, etc., which the representative stated, in selling the plant., was to be included in Qh< price named at the time.— Resolved, That -Ehe account be relumed for adjustment, after which a cheque will be forwarded according to arrangement. A. Lawn wanted the 10 per cent additkmal rate retunaed, as be Had been delayed in getting his rates paid at the proper time. — Council could not accede to the request. The Elthaon Coumty Council forwarded a cheque, for £57 8s 4d, being that Couincil's contribution to the A«roa road. There will Be subsidy on this amount. OEO RIDING. H. Munro reported: Main South Road: J. Rrieger has completed oontmct No. 84, andi we have put in hand tbe maintenance work on the old partiotne of the road. Skeet Road : J. Erieger has made a start with contraot No. 87, delivery of boulder stone, and i& making good progress with th& work. Oeo Central ' and Southern : Kehely Bros, have completed contract (No. 88) on these roads. The wet weather coming on so soon has tended to militate to a certain extent against the usefulness of this work, as the gravel had not sufficient time to set j the only material procurable in this vicinity is of a rather inferior quality. Amroa Road: As the revenue accruing to this road* from the Eltham County has come to hand we will go on> with repalrß at onoe. The road is in such a deploraEle state that, -the amount of money available for expenditure will not be anything like adequate for requirements. Opimake-Sfcratfozid Road : The small bridge over the Oeo stream on this road collapsed at one end during. fEe recent storm, owing to the water getting hehiind the pier. We are< putting in a new pier, amd will have it fit for traffic in a couple of days. Eltham Road: We have got the maintpnanoe work weU in band on this road, and the greater portion o* the stone is broken ready fox rase. I would recommend laying a false Heck of two inch red pine on the Taungataxa bridge on ibis' road, as the old deck is getting-very weak and .requires constant repairing. ' By laying the false deck diagonally, it would act as a .Brace said considerably strengthen the bridge; the cost would be about £15. I understand the Awatuna Co-opera-tive Dairy Company are making an application to ihe Council to have t£e frontage to their Taungatara factory metalled. On, account of this factory being in such close proximity to the bridge, it would be a gieat convenience to the travelling public to have this frontage metalled from the building out to the centre ol .the present metal way, as during the factory houre in the morning there is invariably such a large number of milk carts collected on the roadway as to almost block the traffic. I would Btromgly recommend the CounWl to have this work done, provided the oompanv pay half cost of same. A good job could be made with .gravel or shingle for about £8. 1 would like to ask the Council if it could Be arranged that tie men working with Horses and drays on tifas mamfeaance works would be allowed to run their horses on the roads to obviate the necessity- of travel King them long disfrinces in the mooning awl evening. If this caTwiot be arranged f would- suggest that the Cotmcil proqare a horse and dray of their own, as we may find it hard to procure drays whoto roquirod. OPUNAKE RIDING. T. Humphries reported:. During the month I have been engaged .repairing the main street, Opunake riding; 299 yards of boulder stone have been crushed, carted out, placed o* the road, and blinded with pit metal. Eltham , Road : A good deal ' of maintenance work has been done during the month. — Opunake Times.
