SPORTING NOTES.
(By Observer.) Race meetings at Marton, Rangitikei, and Wanganui of two days each, follow one another in quick miioaession, but owing to the continued sloppy state of tiacfes there will be few if any locallytrained hoi&es sufficiently forward to compet«. In mentioning the above it is with, anything- but a, desire to detract the merits of the Egmont J.C. grounds, for in. fact at this season Howeora. is by no means singular excepting for its possession of an extra, humid dimate. The majority of horses in work here axe in robust condition, tlhose in connection with them being satisfied to look further ahead for engagements. , The Argyte street stables, now tenanted by H. Eva's team, provide some promising material fox the young trainer to try his drill with A though several of them on the raw side, -ha-viag only been recently broken in, and consequently not likeUy to show to great advantage tine season. In Uhlando he has, however, a wellseasoned gelding, and one that has wintered' remacrkably well. This hamdsome brown son 01 TJhlan and Ravement has. on seTOial occasions demonstrated' Wa ability to gallop, and' being bTed i on ■stout staying lines- mey place » good .handicap to his credit this season. A bay 3-year-old gelding By Daystar from Myra (the dam of Haydn) may be considered a Jikely-looking animal, possessing good bone and substance, wnioh may peradventune some day servie him well in a bid to emulate the deeds of his doughty half-brothier. Another 3-year-o!d, only (recently broken, is a bay son of Malatua and! SeJEngeir, the latter by St. Leger, from Brassolis (the dam of Black Reynard). Good Tunning blood, suitely! The chestnut gelding Lent, now *4 years, has so far raced disappointingly, which, together with <a wiell-develop*d 4-year-old son of Daystar and St. Ueger mare, complete the team.' • 1 , So far the progeny of St. Cyr .haw not proved a great suociess as iracehorses. One of the few to aid hm reputation is daremont, who certainly can claim' the title "useful." This 6-year-old!' gelding started 15 times last season, and thrice secured the pride of place, failing to gain a position only oni four occasions. Claremont in a gmeat measure owes his success to the judicious placing of R. Brough, .the proprietor of the conveniently quarters in < Wilson street, who now has the upstanding brown looking big and healthy after his. winter xietirement. . t He has also another candidate to make a bid 1 for the new season's honors 1 in Siiveilead, the five-yeotr-old son. of Sylvia .Park, who still iretains privileges as a hack. Regret will .be expressed at the news of Glenullin's enforced xietiremeat. He had been undergoing his preparation at New Plymouth -and was engaged in the New. Zealand Cup with 7st 61b and (had only to reproduce his last summer's 'form to claim a distinct chance. J. Gallagher who returned to Auckland last Wieek bears the best -wishes of 1 his patrons and others who became associated during has season's training career here. Training and 1 riding Regulation in her second victory of the Stratford Cup and afterwards cultivating her into an excellent jumper he had the misfortune to lose her eer-vices shortly after ' ■winning- distinction ' over the hurdles ait 1 the apeoant Wellingtan' Winter meeting." The two-yjear-olds'Miss Vena and Mhilga Biil also paidi.-tribute to..their mentor by being first to catch the judge's eye in their respective lengagements. ■ - The New Zealand' Cap candidate Maniapoto is giving complete satisfaction in his preparation .'at Wang^nui' and' lam also told by a returned visitor that Armistice is* looking superbly well. ■, , , : Bombay, who worn the ■Jhu<rdie> 'eV6nt at Military Touamamant.jheire' waa,' I am informed, unlucky-tb 'be .defeated at the Wanganui Hunt. Club/meeting last week. Mr Gteaves winning a race on his chest-1 nut maone Cyrogrie.and Mr j. hwin, who ' akiliully piloted Red Shanks into second place in the Hunt Cup, are hoth well- 1 known in local circles. Tranmere by Birkenhead--Aph!rodite and full* brother to the successful Wailesy who was. purchased last summer by a resident of this district, owing to has proclivity fox growing .has beeo thrown out of training and awarded a spell on his owniei'B estate. The fimsb (thoroughbred stallion I have seen out this season was Coronet, the aristocratic old bay looking as handsome as paint. ' • •'
