MONTHLY- MEETING. I The monthly meeting of the Borough Council was held on Wiednesday night; present— it<he Mayor (Mr B. C. Rabbins), Ors Morrissey, Brunette, Boyd, Whittington, Hurrell, CampbeiU, Wilkinson and Pacey. CORRESPONDENCE. Martin Petrie, South rood, Hawora, wrote requesting the Council to either asI phalt or sand iihy footway in Main South. j woad from Regent street to Milmoe street. The Cbunty Clerk (Mr Budge) wrote, suggesting September 5 as the date for the proposed conference wijth wsference to the boundaiy roads. The date was adopted. The Secretary for the Hawera Hospital and Charitable Aid Board wrot» requesting to have arrears to end of July, amounting te £30 19s 4d, forwarded.— Tho amount i 3 to be paid. The Valuer-General forwarded a new valuation roll recontfly compiled by tbfl department. The letter covering the roll hoped that the Council would find it satis^ factory When tho borough was valued in 1903 the figures were. £328,239, th* present valuations being £396,135, which tho Valutir-Genejra-1 said appeared to show that satisfactory progress had been made in the borough during the past four years. LIGHTING COMMITTEE. The Lighting Committee recommended that tfoo Electric Company be written tJ drawing their attention to the fact that tho lighfe are not satasfaotory, and requiring thiom tb rectify.— Adopted. WORKS COMMITTEE. Tho Works Committee recommended (11 ijiat the foreman report at next meeting of the Council respecting all extatordinairy water supplies not at present treated =iv such. (2) That all property-holders not connected with drainage system be notified to connect within one month.— Adopted. THE ABATTOIR. The manager (Mr Worthy) reported the number of stcck slaughtered during tiie past month as follows :— Cattie 84, calves 16, sheep 232, lambs 5, pigs 47; wholly condemned— cattle 1, pigs 1. [ FOREMAN'S REPORT. I Tho Borough Foreman (Mr Mabpherson) reported as follows :— During the past month I have had the f ootpatns and water tables cleaned. , I am now stripping the borough pit for the purpose* of obtaining gravel for binding, etc. With, wsfarenee to the complaint of the Fsr& Brigade that a numbw of .fireplugs were ever* gr)own or coveored up, I made a careful inspection next day over the 'whole town, and found only one plug covered up. As. to the indicator post at' corner of High and Victoria streets, this was cut off level with the path four or five mfcnfchu ago, whien I was instructed by t&e Council that in future " posts Were to be replaced by a 9 x 9 white tSle on the footpath. The Reserves Commilttee submitted the following recommendation: That Dr Sloan's rent be reduced to £15 per annun... to take effect from October 13.— The Mayor moved t»hi& adoption of *fche nepon. —Seconded by Cr HurreM.— Cr Morrissey mioved an amendment, That the request be not acceded to.— Tho amendment was carried and the motion lost. DEPUTATION. Mr H. Foy waited on the Council, in fcupport of a largely-signed petition, requesting iliat the west side of the Wi'son streeft footpath should be tarred aiid sanded^ and generally put in order 1 , ia preference to the east side. He said that the east side had only three houses, whereas there wew aK>ut 14 on tihe west. The Mayor informed Mr Foy that th.« Council nroposed tarring and sanding the east sidia from the High street corner and forming and gravelling the west side f ron Surrey stifco>t to Glowr rood. Mr Foy. resuming, said if an improvement could be made it would confer a great benefit up.en thie resLdentfi of thatside. Having thanked the Council "Mr Fov withdrew. Subsequently it was decided to inform Mr Foy that WKlson street was to be put. in ordeT. THE ABATTOIR AREA. to the Tasman Sea; on the south by the Tosman Sea. The Abattoir Committee recommended the above. The Mayor said the recommendations were the outcome of a conference befcwteen the two bodies. Cr Whittington moved, That th& recom., mendations be adopted. Cr Brunette seconded. Cr Morrisscy moved as an amendment, That the old boundaries be retcincd. Mr Wilkinson seconded. , . The amendment was. negatived, and . Or Morrissey. then moved. That the Minister for Agriculturo be asked to define the area. This motion lapsed, and the Mayor's motion for the adoption of the report) was put to the meeting, and carried. / ' 1 . THE BATHS. , The Council wont into committee tr» deal witJi a tender for the lease of the Borough Baths, and upon tihej Council resuming the Mayor reported that the committee recommended acceptance' of Mr Worcup's tender for tho lease of the bathtf for the season, at £5.
