PARLIAMENTARY NOTES.
A NATIVE PETITION.
[Bx Telegraph. — Special to Star.] WELLINGTON, Sept. 3. Some 285 natives of the Aotea native land district recently petitioned the House praying that their lands may not be dealt with in accordance with the report of the Native Commission. The Native Affairs Committee report that they have no recommendation to make. COMPENSATION FOR WRONGFUL ARREST. The Petitions Committee have recommended the Government to pay £75 compensation to Isaac Taylor, of Otakau, who, it will be remembered, was arrested in mistaken identity for a crime committed by another person upon the evidence of several independent witnesses. Conyer, at one time a leading man in the management of the New Zealand railways, but now residing in, Melbourne, petitioned the House for a compassionate allowance, but the Railway Committee declined to make any ' recommendation. . Advances to Settlers Act, and if so. would he amend the law so as to> provide^, that loans should be paid more' promptly. INFANT LIFE PROTECTION. Respecting the question of infant life protection, whioh was before both Houses to-day, the Attorney-General states that the amount expended m charitable aid last year was £102,863, expended on insane £107,168, total £210,034. Of this sum £16,133 was spent on children.
