THE LATE MR GRAY

The late Mr Gray was regarded as thedoyen of the Civil Seorvioft, which he entered on February 1, 1864. When he became Secretary of the Postal Department on May 1, 1874, the letters received and posted in the colony numbened nine millions per annum ; now they reach seventy millions. The staff then comprised 735 ; is is now 3209. Reveinvue (not including telegraplis) was £60,535; last year it was £445.310, or with telegraphs £743,090. Mr Gray served under eighteen PostmastersGeneral, the first being the late Sir Julius Viogeil. Previous to joining the Civil Service, he was for a short time on the staff of the Taranaki News and afterwards on the Nelson Colonist. The funeral takes place on Monday morning.
