Catalogues of the 'sale of Mr Isaac Lupton's Clydesdale stock may now be obtained from the auctioneers, Messrs Freeman R. Jackson, and Co., of Wanganui. A farmer in Court during the hearing of the Oeo cases was afked how long the milking life of the average oow was. He replied 12 years, and said that after that it would not be wise to milk a cow. It would be better to fatten her—for beef. Dr Pomare .supports the statement of Dr irongley, district health officer for Auckland, that thJe '-aisease which appeared among the school children at Rotorua is not so seriojis as reports in the Northern papers might indicate. "It is an ordinary .scab, an itch," said Dr Pomare. "It wants plenty of soap." . n
A lawyer engaged at the compensationclaims, getting answer upon answer that land and produce had risen in, price, and a drop was not immediately anticipated, de-, cided that "hope springs eternal in the* farmer's breast."
On Tuesday last (the Tamanaka Herald reports) a Waitara. resident was Charged before the S.M. with adding in the commission of the offence of giving liquor to a native woman. Mr Townsehd appeared for the accused .and took exception to the information as by the police, on the ground that it disclosed no offence, quoting the Alcoholic Liquor, Sales Gontoofl Act, 1896, which creates the offence of giving Hqiior to a -native woman, but does not mak.e it an offence to "aid. in giving." His Worship upheld Mr Townsend's contention, and dismissed the information.
There is a good deal of indignation at. Stratford owing to the tone of a letter ij received from the Minister of Public Works. The letter replying to resolutions passed at a recent meeting says thse Minister regrets to find that "the good work done in thp district is not appreciated, as it would be in many other partis of the colony where the needs are at least as great." Further, the ■ Minister says : — "With the many railway works at hand' a larger sum could not be provided for the Mount Egmont and Huiroa railways, and it is a question whether it is not advisable to suspend these works until a larger sum ■can be annually provided for their completion. This will receive consideration when dealing with the Estimates for the ensuing yvaa- " This is regarded as a threat that these railway works will be ?uspended. Further, the ' Hon. W. HallJones proposes to hand over the Ohura road, as far us Whang&momona, or a little beyond, to the Stratford County Council and to make it responsible for the maintenance. "The land," ho says, to the consternation of the County Council, "is all taken up, settled, and paying rates to the local authority, and so that- effect may Tie gi\ien to the resolution you forwarded me, 1 am arranging for this road up to and including the metalled portion in and about Whangamomona being handed over to the Coun*y Council, who will provide for maintenance. This will permit-^of any. money authorised by Parliament being utilised in carrying on farther metalling."

At the Magistrate's Court this moming a young man named Edmund Fredieriok Fraei was charged with the theft of three tins of preserved apples from Edgar Chiv-. eis, Okaiawa. He was ■remaaided for a week.
On account of .the Stratford races being held on 13th, Messrs Young, Hobbs and Co.'s Eltham sale, particulars of which are advertised elsewhere, will be held) on Monday, 11th in&t. The same firm will hold their next wool sale at Stratford on Tuesday, April 2nd.
A young •man inamed Alfred' Bishell was brought into Eltiham on Thursday suffering from a fractured leg. Bishell worked at Mt H. Jenkins' farm on the Lower Stuart »oad, and while unloding some milk cans was accidentally thrown from tlhe cant. Dr Harrison attended fehe sufferar, who will probably be ©eat to the Haweara Hospital. — Argue.
A witness in the compensation cases heard in the Magistrate's Court on Thursday said it was no lase putting cattle in a sale to get a good price. No matter what the vendor said farmers would not believe him at tne sale yards. "I'm sorry to hear that," said the cross-examining counsel. "I've been sorry, to my cost, too often," retorted tho witness; "yes> even in buying off friends If tho cows were good they were hard." "And your 'friends' were hard, too, I should say," replied the lawyer. With respect, to the Paget v. Baskin assault case, heard at Stratford, in which a verdict and costs were given for defendant, solicitor for plaintiff has applied for a new trial. The application, as set out therein, is based on the grounds that the defendant was guilty of improper^ practice' to the prejudice of the plaintiff at the trial of the sarid action, in having on separate occasions shortly prior to the said trial J interviewed at least two of the jurors who subsequently tried the said action, to wit, Wfliam Tibster Clifton, of Stratford, bHacksmith, and Arthur Marbmead Burrows, of Eltham, traveller, with respect to the said action, and in having at such interviews communicated or endeavorted to communv. v cat© the material faeta oi-«&«r' case "from, his point of vi^ir to the saia''WiUiam Foster Clifton and Arthur Martmeacl Bumows respectively; and also in having acted similarly towards James George Montgomerie,of Stratford, laborer, and Frank' William George Amoore, of Eltham, oarpenter, who wene jurors on the panel from which the jury was subsequently drawn.
