The day is fine but breezy for the second test match. The wicket is good and promises to be very fast. Williams won the toss and New Zealand goes in. Before play began De Trafford, on behalf of th» M.C.C., presented T. Raphael, Secretary of the New Zealand Cricket Council, with a gold matchbox and cigar-cutter in recognition of his services to th© team, and spoke highly of the arrangements made on their behalf. \ S. Haywaxd aod Tuffndl stand out of the M.C.C. team.
Sale and Lawrence bsgan batting at 11.35, Torrens and May bowling. The latter's second over was hit for 11, and as both men got strokes to the boundary 20 was not long in- appealing. Lawrence thieo reached double figures with further hits off May, but at 27 he should have been ran out only the ball was returned to the wrong end. Douglas (relieved May, and his first over proved fatal to Lawrence, who was caught in the slips by Branston.
