WEDNESDAY, MARCH 6, 1907. TECHNICAL EDUCATION.

Delivered every evening by o'oloox in Hawera Manafo, Normanby, Okaiawa, KHhrtm, Manga* <oW, Kaponga, Awatuna, Opun&ke, Otakeho, Manutahi, Alton, Hurleyvilie, P>Uoa. ana Waveriey.

There is just now a revival of intexest in technical instruction in this district, due to the energy of Mar Hintz, the director appointed) by the Wanganui Education Board). In Hawera, Patea, Manaia, and other places active co-operation is being given, buit there appears to be still plenty 01 scope for further activity. Some little time ago a deputation waited on the Borough Council and the latter, as an eaamiest of its sympathy, voted £25 towardls tihe technical education fund. No need exists now for demonstrations of the value of technical instruction. It has long since been accepted tduat a practical continuation of school life must result in individual and general progress. From what the director saidl at the Council meeting it appeals t>hat if the people of /this district give intrinsic evidence' of their willingness to associate themselves aeajtily wdth the formation of the various classes, the Government will not be vfound unwilling or unready to build the necessary technical school. There is just a danger that enthusiasm may not be sufficiently aroused to justify the Government taking action ; it> wouid be a great pity if that, proved to be the case. OfheT towns in TaxanakJ are snowing themselves to be fully alive to the meed and value of educational progress. Why not Hawera,? As tae centre of a fairly large population we have need for a. school here. It cannot be expected that t!b» boys and girl® will voluntarily join these classes; it is for the parents, who know, to lead them by pointing out the very great advantages to be reaped therefrom. As representatives of the rate-

payers the Borough Council have shown tneinselve6 to be alive to the situation, and it remains for the parents to take tlieir share in the work. We hope to -sec a thoroughly equipped technical school suct.e£6.falJy established in, Hawera at an early dale.
