A remarkable story was told at Burelem Police Court, Staffordshire, when Sidney Booth, of Kidsgrove, was summoned by Sarah Elizabeth Shotton for an affiliation order in respect of four children. The woman was married many years ago in Derbyshire, but left her husband after some time, and for nine years travelled the country giving music lessons. Then her first husband being reported dead, she married Booth ten years ago, and four children were born to them. The- first- husband, whom she had presumed to be dead, had now suddenly appeared upon the 6cene, with the result that Shotton and her second husband parted, and she now sought an order for maintenance of the children. The first husband having given evidence, the Magistrates made an order for payment by the second husband of 2s a week for each 1 child.

While golfing on Stonehaven Links, Aberdeenshixe, Sheriff Mowat saw a motor ; car drive up. In it were the sheriff clerk deputy, a young man of 21, and a blush- , ing girl of 17 summers. "We have motor- I ed from Aberdeen to get married," the ' youthful bridegroom explained. And the _ deputy clerk added that there was no one to perform me ceremony unless Sheriff Mowat obliged. Duncan McOulman, leading stoker on H.M. destroyer Wear, was found in the sea at Sheerness unable to move through his right foot being fixed in the iron supports of the town pier. The water was up to his neck. His. explanation was that a bluejacket belonging to the destroyer Swale had fallen overboard, and he plunged into the water to his assistance, when his foot became entangled in the pier supports, and he was unable to move. The man from the Swale managed to get ashore.
