SUPREME COURT.

PALMSRSTON N., September 8. At the Supreme Court this morning John Whelan came up for sentence on a, Charge vi assaulting Patrick Ashe, Awafruri, on August 5. The Chief Justice said he did' not know what to do with the prisoner. He would not grant probation, also he could not impose a heavy sentence without depriving him of the chance of obtaining a pensioh. After pointing out the seriousne&si of the offence ho said he would deal rather leniently, and sentenced the prisoner to three months' hard labor.
