CHAMBER OF COMMERCE PROPOSALS.

AUCKLAND, May 1. The Chamber of Commerce adopted reports to-day suggesting amendments in the tariff; the appointment of independent Ixnards representing each branch of commerce to consider all questions concerning the tariff, and to prevent such anomalies as at present exist. The reports urged that the duty be taken off potatoes, or only 10s per ton duty imposed, and recommended further special ifcariff arrangements with Canada and reciprocity withi Aus tralia for surplus products. A duty of 2d per pound on packets of less than 41b of tea was urged. Parliament and all Chambers of Commerce are to be f urnished with a copy of the report.

ATTEMPTED SUICIDE. DUNEDIN. May 1. Tames Parland, a resident of Morning - ton, attempted to commit suicide this morning by cutting his throat. He was found by two men on the road with an ugly gash" in his ' throat, from which a considerable quantity of blood had flowed. The wound, which was apparently inflicted with, a table knife, is not considered dangeious. Fairland has been in bad health for some years, and had lately suffered from insomnia. EARTHQUAKE AT NELSON. WAKAPUAKA, May 2. A sharp shock of earthquake occurred here at 5 minutes past 8 this morning.
