BOWLING TOURNAMENT.

TARANAKI CLUBS IN HAWERA. SUCCESSFUL OPENING DAY.

j ' Brilliant weather favored the opening ,day of the Taranaki Bowling Tournament . on Friday. The previous week had been wet and wintry, so' that- the bright, warm «day was the more acceptable. The green ! was in good order, although ve>ry tender : in" consequence of the heavy rains, which had recently fallen. By ten o'clock the J seven competing rinks (56 players) were in attendance, and the tournament was 'opened by' the Mayor (Mr fi/i>bbiris)j who 'welcomed the visitors. Mr- J\ Paul,' New jPlymoufch, suitably replied) and offered a ifew words of seasonable advice- respectMng the green and -the treatment it; should f receive from bowlers. The Presidenti of the Hawefra Club (Mr Dingle) explained that owing to the shortening-, days it had been decided' to play 16 "heads to each "game. This, would'^nable ali ll th t e contests ; to be got off on Friday, 'Saturda!y" and 'Monday. As'tlie day- wore on the weather .continued to be glorious,- with, the result that a large mimb'er of spectators assembled "to view the proceedings. Mes..dajnes Dingle, Tait, Cow-ell, Christie, Sutjtotij R. Hicks and Foy, kindly furnished afternoon tea;, arid all present were generously entertained: Taken, as a wliole jthe' play generally' \^ias' excellent. 'The most exciting finish wtas <hat between. I&tzrpy and New Plymouth. The scoresi had been pretty even all through, and with one rink finished and the other one head to go New Plymouth was a point alhead When tlhe skips, Paul and Burnside, went up to play Fitzroy was lying one, making the aggregate scores equal and the head very difficult for Paul. Burnside with his first bowl drew a beauty, and though Paul made two excellent attempts hie failed to make any change, and Fitaroy notcJhed their first victory over the senior club. Another interesting' game was' tfoat between Stratford iand Opuwake and Pihama. The combined team had the advantage pretty well all through, Mason ; getting a big pull by scoring seven in one '. head. He had lain three or four, but, OurEis with a drive took out the nearest Stratford bowl, and in his second shot was an inch or two short with an attempt to save. With such a good lead, it now being 12 to 2 in tfa's rink, Opunake and' Pihama were in a strong position, and 1 played a canny winning game throughout, coming out witih a substantial margin j •to ihie good In good tianV Ihe three j rounds set down for the day were got oft", with the results given below: — i
