BAD BUTTER IN LONDON.
SUPPOSED TO BE AUSTRALIAN
[PBESS ASSOCIATION.]
WELLINGTON, April 9. Wath reference to the report in Saturday's London market cablegrams that the quab'ty of the bulk of colonial butter on offer was unsatisfactory, statements made by the heads of arms engaged in .the butter trade make it practically certain that ifee j message refers to Australian butter. j After seeing the message, Mr J. G. Harkness, Secretary of the National Dairy [ Association of New Zealand, said : "All butter exported from Australia and New Zealand is looked upon as colonial butter, but so far as we know here from the grading of our butter for shipment, tihe quality this season is equal to, if not better than, previous seasons' butter. Therefore I think the cablegram refers more especially to Australian butter. In looking through the principal Australian newspapers you will find it stated that the quality of Australian butter is not up to tiie mark this season. The last AgentGeneral's cable received here, dated 2nd April, states: "The market is unfavorably affected by large quantities of medium quality.' We interpret that to mean it does not refer to the New Zealand article as shown by the prices, New Zealand being 99s per cwt as compared with Australian 93s per cwt." Mr Harkness' view was borne out by Mr J. B. MacEwan, who said the telegram must apply to Australian, for the simple reason that no complaints have come through, as far as they are aware, in connection with the best New Zealand brands, while it is understood in the trade that a fairly large percentage of Australian haa been unsaifefactoTy.
