(Received January 24, 10.31 a.m.) MELBOURNE, January 24. Yesterday was the hottest day in tho city since 1862— HO^deg. in the shad©. Tlie beat- wave over tha State is accompanied liy disastrous bush fires in every direction. Ihe town of Daylesford narrowly escaped being swept away. The fire is now raging along a frontage of ten miles, end it is feared that the whole country between Daylesford and Castlejnaine is doomed unless the wind abates. Many thousand acres of grass, and in some cases crops, are • destroyed. Shops and houses in thfe outskirts of Daylesford were burnt. One man lost his life in saving his effects.
