DELIVERED OVER TO THE TURKS
A typical old American acted as .doorkeeper at the Ausiarian hospital at Constantinople. But he was not so old as he looked, though fat© had dealt harshly with him. During the Armenian massacies Yds, wife, brother, and son were butchered by the brutal Turkish soldiery. Apparently a broken and crushed man. he lived quietly with his daughter, a pretty, vivacious girl -.of fourteen, under the piotection of the Austrian flag, and fulfilled im simple duties satisfactorily. TTib daughter frequented the Austrian school, wliere she was conspicuous by her cleverness. Her father was extremely fond of her, and the two were always together. Very often the old concierge was sent into the town on errands, and the Turkish canvass permanently stationed at the hospital door felt no suspicion when the old man from time to time brought in small parcels which were supposed to contain supplies. These parcels he entrusted to various nurses, with the request that they might be taken care of. as they contained books for his daughter. One morning a Turkish police inspector appeared at the Austrian Consulate, and after a brief conference proceeded with some armed cavasses to the hospital where the Armenian was immediately arrested. The building was searched, and a basket was discovered filled with the doorkeeper's packages. There were tlrirtyseven of them, and each one \vas> found to contain explosives and sections of infernal machines. A quantity of revolutionary literature was found in the Ar.meiakui's room, proving that, he was a party to a conspiracy against the Sultan, and through his daughter maintained an active correspondence with the Armenian revolutionary party. The unfortunate father and daughter, being Turkish subjecta, bad to be handed over to the police. They were taken away, where, no one knows; and one shudders to contemplate what their ultimate fate may be.
