WELLINGTON RACES— FIRST DAY.

WELLINGTON, January 20. The new course at Trentham was* opened to-day in fine weather and in the presence of 8000 people. Sir J. G. Ward' represented the Government, and "sports" from all parts (of the colony were present. At luncheon Sir Joseph Ward congratulated the club in having secured a course which he believed would prove to be one of the finest south of the line. A capital day's sport was witnessed and £23,729 handled by the machines, which, though not a record for the colony, is a record for Wellington. Anniversary Handicap. — Boris 1, Letherin 2, Tekarawa 3. . All started. A good race. Won by a little over a length. Time, 1.42. Divs., £1 16s and £9 Is. Ruapehu Hack Handicap. — Declination 1, Czarevna 2, Aotea 3. All started but Apa, The Voucher and Queen's Messenger. Won by a length. Time, 1.16 1-5. Divs., £2 19s and £3 14s. Hack Hurdles.— Geologist 1, Waitarere 2, South Star 3. All started. Won easily. Time, 3.18 3-5. Divs., £2 19s and 12s. Cup.— Ropa 1, Achilles 2, Melodeon 3. All started. Achilles and Ropa fought out the issue nearly the whole way, but in the straight Ropa, favored with her light weight, cut down Achilles and won by a length and a quarter, Melodeon beating Paritutu by a quarter of a length- for third place. Time, 2.33— a record for the colony Divs., £29 1* and £2 6s. Telegraph Handicap.— Ailsa. 1, Petrovna, 2, Sir Tristram 3- AM started but Ballarat. Chivalry, and Black Reynard. Ailsa led the whole way and won fairly easy at the finish. Time, 1.15 2-5. Divs., £1 15s and 19s. . Toneariro Hack Handicap.— Apa 1, Glenullin 2, Czarevna 3. Scratched : Maui, Lady Waywaid, Tekanui. Won easily. Time, 1.43 1-5. Divs., £2 18s and .l3B^ Nursery Handicap.— Kurawaka 1, Moscow 2, Ivanoff 3 AM started but Mahuta. Won pretty easily. Time, 49secs. Divs., £16 14s and £2 18s. Electric Handicap.— Chivalry 1, Ingleneuk 2, Medallist 3. Scratched : Petrovna, Ailsa and Gawain. Won easily by two lengths. Time, 60 3-ssecs. Divs., £1 17s and £1 3s.
