AUCKLAND, December 15. At the Supreme iCourt Henry Cooper Douglas, convicted of having stolen a diamond ring from the dwelling of Mrs McNairn. at Parnell, was- sentenced to 12 months', hard labor, .his Honor commenting strongly on the prisoner's defence. Tom Albert Jackson, a hawker, but formerly a ranger for the Mount Albert Road Board> . surrendered on, bail to, take his re-trial (the jury having disagreed at the first trial) on a charge of having assaulted a 16-year-old girl attending the Newmarket cookery,' classes last February. Accused was^ound guilty, and remaride'd for sentence.^
• nUNEDIN, December 15. At .the Police/ Court to-day Wong Kow was fined £20; and costs for having in his possession opium suitable for smoking. Harold Thompson.' pleaded guilty to a series of charges of misappropriating £25; the money of Wardell Bros., his employers. He was remanded for the probation officer's report.
