TROUBLE IN BRITISH GUIANA.
GEORGETOWN, December 2. There is a dockers strike in British Guiana, accompanied by riots, the whites being greatly alarmed. The forces fired repeatedly at the mob, causing many casualties. Tho Governor and his' officers are beseiged, and the arrival of a gunboat is enxiously awaited. The cruisers Sappho and Diamond have left St. Thomas for here.
,A case of considerable interest to all lovers of the beautiful, and those interested in the preservation of our native bush, was before the Magistrate's Court the other morning (the Taranaki Herald reports), Mr F. Simpson, Commissioner of Crown Lands, proceeded against Mr J. Montefiore, of W?stown, for trespass and damage caused by his stock over the Rotokare Scenery and Preservation Grounds at Ratapihipihi. This case was made a test one to act as a warning against those who habitually allow their stock into this class of reserve. " Ths Commissioner of Crown Lands did not press for a heavy penalty, but he wished it to be- generally known that it was the intention of the Crown to lake action in any similar case of trespass over scenery and forest reserves. A fine of 40s and costs of court was inflicted by the Magistrate. We are asked to state that the eggthrowing episode at Manaia. which took place on Friday night last, emanated from a, few country hoodlums who we*e in town bent on mischief ; "and to lay the blame of the proceedings on the shoulders cf the Maniia people would be rather a libel on tfr» well-known reputation of those who reside in the "City of the Plains."
