AUCKLAND, December 4. A fire at Helensville destroyed Smith's Terminus Hotel, Callef's (bootmaker) shop, •and Stewart's (baker) shop. The damage done amounts to about £3000.
CEMETERY DESECRATION
INVERCARGILL, December 4. Several tombstones at St. John's cemcterv have been wrecked during the week. It "was believed at first that the gale had blown them over, but five more were thrown down and some badly smashed on Saturday nin*t. From the nature of the damage it is certain' that 6ome miscreants are responsible.
ANOTHER POLITICAL LIBEL ACTION
WELLINGTON, December 4. Mr Fisher, the candidate for Wellington Central, has instructed his solicitors to issue a writ against the New Zealand Times, claiming £1000 damages for libel, alleged to be contained in the Sentinel, an electioneering publication printed at the , Times office.
