THE PARLIAMENTARY SHIELD.
IS IT A LOTTERY?
iKRESS ASSOCIATION.']
AUCKLAND, December 1.
Proceedings were taken against a number of well-known stationers before Mi R. W. Dwyers, S.M., at the Police Court to-day for selling slips to the cliief detective entitling him to compete in the parliamentary shield competition, upon the grounds that the competition was a lottery. Mr Mays, on behalf of the Crown Prosecutor, submitted that it was purely a matter of guesswork to forecast the successful candidates, and pointed out that even Mr Massey or Mr Seddon could not do it. Mr Cotter, for the defence, submitted that it involved skill and judgment to estimate correctly. The Magistrate's decision will be given to-morrow. AUCKLAND, December 2.
Mr Dyer, S.M., gave judgment holding that the "Parliamentary shield scheme" was not a lottery within the meaning of tho Ace. and dismissed the information.
