The Czar's audience to Sir Charles Hurdinge (British Ambassador) prior to the latter starting on leave, was markedly cordial. The audience ha 6 been much commented on as being connected with a projected Anglo-Russian understanding. Count Beckendorff, Russian Ambassador in London, is going to St. Petersburg to contiune pourparlers. The Times' St. Petersburg correspondent states tliat with a view to defeating the projected Anglo-Russian entente, Germany afforded Russia most alluring inducements. The proposal had reference to joint action in the Baltic, and the ultimate apportionment of Austria-HungaTy. \ M. de Witte readily advocated the i scheme, but France emphatically opposed , it, and pointed out its defects.
