Rain • fell- throughout 'tlie game, and tlie ground and ball were in a bad state. For some time after the. kickoff play was fairly, even. About halfway through the spell Burke- caught tho ball and appealed . for a mark, .but did not wait for. the whistle. and took a pot at goal aud tho ball sailed over the bar. V*»ry , shortly after this ev,ent. the ball was kicked to-the Opunake" full-back, and the Patea forwards following up very' smartly gave him no time to return.." and the ball - was kicked oyer'the line. ' A race ensued, the -result being that T. Sheahan scored in a good C. Sheahan lucked a good goal. Qnunake rallied, and at: _ tacked Patea vigorously, but the defence was solid and the spell ended with Pateu having registered nine points and Opuuako not having .scored. ' v ' Opunakeopened the second spell with a series of attacks, and as ' they several -times crossed the Patea~line they must be considered 'unlucky in not scoring. . Good, kicking by Burke and C. Sheahan; particu--^ . larly the former, saved Patea on many \, occasions. From a forward rush Guy got over the Patea. line, and scored a neat try. S. Fonyth Jailed to convert. From this out .things were very willing, and very slightly-in favor of Patea, who appeared to be in better condition than their opponents. <■..„

Heko Martin was the best back ftVthe Opunake team, and S. Forsyth also- played well, though, he has played better games. Guy played five-eighth, . but was right out of ii is element. Of tlie. forwards, Moffitt was the best and~Young also played a good game. Opunake came down .with twelve men, and picked up two substitutes in Hawera. Sir Powdrell had" charge of tho game. At tho hands of the El t ham Seniors Hawera met their' first defeat this. season on Saturday last at Eltham. ' - It was raining^ all through tlie game, but the ground stood the soaking well. Early in t|ie first spell Hawora -were penalised near tlicir own goal, and heavy and soaked though the ball was-Glasgow kicke.l a splendid goal. This was the only score of the match and tho rest of tho game, was very evenly contested, though Hawera looked like scoring on more occasions than did Eltham.
Hawera did not have their best team in the field, the forwards being somewhat disorganised. All the Hawera backs played well, and as a combination wero superior to their opponents. Tlie forwards, with .one exception, worked hard, but could oiot make' their usual combined headway. Garry .was the weak' spot of tho Ekhnm- backs, the others doing fairly well.
