The police scandal cases came before tho Supreme Court to-day, when Edward Quill, - ex-constable, was tried on a charge of blealing a ring, pieces of cloth, a hair-clipping machine, tobacco, pipes, and various other articles. t Accused pleaded not guilty, and was de- > fended by Mr A. C. lianlon. After the evidence, Mr Hanlon addressed the jury. f He contended what the Crown said in . effect was that because a man earning 7s 6d a day had three pipes and about a pound of tobacco in his possession the jury 1 must find he was a thief. Witnesses did not pretend to say the articles were the property of their employers. All they said was that the goods were like their employers*. Beyond that the .Crown would not. go. s} The jury, after a quarter^of an hour's (j( j retirement, returned a verdict of not guilty . and Quiii was discharged. ' Thomas Moses, 28 years, and James Maedonakl, 31 years, who had previously been found guilty, were then brought. up for sentence. The Crown Prosecutor said Moses was convicted in 1890 of theft from a dwelling, and received three months' probation ; in 1902 ho was convicted of shop- j breaking, and ordered to come up when called on. Tie then went with a contingent to South Africa, and on his return was appointed to the Permanent Ar- - tillery, and subsequently drafted into the police. The convictions, were- not known, or he would not have been appointed to tho police. As to Macdonald, be had served in the police for 7£ years, and there was nothing against him. Moses wa.s then sentenced to five years. " and Maedonakl -to three years' hard labor Oliver Henry Osbovnc was also sen- ' tenced to three years. ' '
