AGENT - GENERAL'S CABLE. [PBES3 ASSOCIATION.] WELLINGTON, March 20. The Department of Industries and Commerce has received the following cableeram from the Agent-General, dated Lona < lon 18th :- '- No alteration in mutton market since cabling last. The lamb market is quiet g and prices have slightly declined for all _ grades. •■„,» There is a better demand for beef. t Average price to-day for hindquarters „ New Zealand beef is 3*d per lb; for foref quarters 2|d. . The butter market is rery firm, and 1 there is an exceptional demand for which 5 the supply falls short. Average price to-day for choicest New Zealand butter, 107s per cwt ; Danish, Ills ; Argeqtine, 1055.v . . The cheese market is very firm, and prices are advancing owing to the strong demand. Average price finest New Zea- [ land cheese to-day is 555. The price of New Zealand hemp, good r to fair Wellington grade, on spot, to-day, ' per ton, is £30 ; April to June shipments, ' £29 10s. The market is active with a ' good demand at £41- . ' The cocksfoot seed market is steady. A few enquiries are being made by speculative buyers. contracts, and should finish within four treeks.

"Hells road.— The contractor has made 4 start on this work.. . "Noonan road. — This work is now completed. The contractor had about 40yds of metal over from the original contract, which I took at contract price and met* ailed a bad hole on the upper end of the road.

"Stone and metal contracts.— The contracts for the delivery of stone on the following roads are completed, and in most cases the stone is broken and ready for patching in the winter :■— Eltham and branch roads, Rawhitiroa and branch roads, Skeet road, Normanby road, Ahiapaipa road. On the Normanby-Manaia road work is progressing satisfactorily. The contractor for the- supply of 100 yards of metal on the Glover road has not yet made a start) and in reply to my letters urging him on he replies that he will not be able to start until the end of the present month. The South road contract is not yet started, but the contractor hopes to start in a few days. The conractor for the supply of 150 yards on Ohangai road states that he is unable to fulfil his contract.

"Eltham road. — The loose metal has been raked up, and the road has been blinded where necessary, and a few places patched. On Monday a start will be madr with the plough and two scoops, clearing water-tables, etc. "Kohiti road.— l have pegged this road from the Inaha stream to the Ketetaura road, and find that road encroaches ou sections 90 and 154, and section 93 en croaches on the road.

"Waingongoro bridge, Skeet road.— l have had two concrete groynes built to protect the banks from erosion, and when the wire netting arrives and is placed in position and backed with willow shoots 1 am satisfied there will be no further trouble in this direction.

"Grader.— During the month the grader has been at work on the Mells, Ingahape. Mere Mere and Allen roads, where it is at present. "Crusher.— The crusher has finished a contract on the Ramie road and rolled same; crushed for contractor on thi Noonan road, rolled metalling on the Mere Mere road, and is now in shed waiting for the completion of contracts on the South and Glover roads."

The report was adopted. The Chairman said the foreman had pegged tho Kohiti road out of usual workhours. He moved that £7 10s be paid the foreman.— Cr. Stewart seconded. — Carried.

A REQUEST.

A number of ratepayers asked that tlv, Wirihana road be gravelled. The Chairman said he thought tha people were entitled to the work. The Council spent too much money in the back country. He himself had to go over a quagmire to his place, and lad he nDt. been in the Council he would have got it fixed up. The traffic in the Waimate riding was what was killing the country. What money was spent on the ma*n roads was spent in clearing slips in the back country. He moved that the request \.o granted. Cr. Winks seconded ; carried. KAPONGA TOWN BOARD.

Mr Robertson and Mr Cowern, of Ka-]-onga, waited on the Council and askec) the Council's consent to the formation of the Kaponga Bown Board. This was merely a formal matter, and consent was given. xiie Council then rose.
