PATEA NOTES.
. (From Our Own Correspondent.)
On St Patrick's Day the Catholics of Patea held a picnic at Mrs Donovan's, Kakaramea, and a moat enjoyable time was spent by everybody present. In tho evening a concert and dance were given, which, though not as successful as in former years, owing no doubt to the strong counter attractions, passed off very well. Songs were contributed by Misses O'Brien and McComisky and Messrs Gordon and Cribb. An "Iris Drill" was very prettily done by the elder pupils, and the blending of colors made a fine effect. An Irish Washerwomen's Dance was also a splendid item, and little Lynn Edwards simply took the audience by storm by her dancing of tlie sailor's hornpipe. Great inconvenience is being caused by the lack of houses available, and the completion of- the Presbyterian manse will result in several "shiftings," for which some of the parties concerned have been waithi},' lor weeks. In another case, a farm having been bought, the pr.eHent tenant is compelled to go to New Plymouth to look for a residence. When tho purclmbur of the farm can get in, the lady wailing tor his house (in temporary lodgings by fprce of circumstances) will be able to remove. One or two new arrivals are now looking for houses, so things arc getting a bit mixed.
