ATHLETIC CHAMPIONSHIPS.
CANTERBURY WIXS THE BANNER.
[PRESS ASSOCIATION.] CHRISTCHURCH, March 18.. The Championship Athletic meetin£ was continued to-da,y, The visiting champions gave a good taste of their c&ljbr>, for Duffey, as had been anticipated, never gave any of his opponents a chance in tha _.., 100 yards championship. Later in the afternoon, conceding starts up to2^yds to a number of others, he easily scored, in the 50 yards Invitation Handicap, running the distance in the world's record for a grass track, 5 2-ssec, a performance which he had previously registered at Dunedin. He appeared to beat' the starter in getting away, but the record was not officially challenged. Shrubb, mainly -.at the request of the officials, started in the Mile Championship, but he had- to strike his colors to the Dunedin runner Bum, who is evidently something! more than brilliant over a mile. The Wo ran together until within 200 yards from home., when the Dunedin man came away and won very easily amid great excitement. Later in the afternoon, however, he easily accounted for the Four Mile Handicap, conceding starts up to 475 yards, and winning with consummate ease at ihe finish. Burk's time of 4min 27 2-sscc in the mile constitutes a New Zealand record.
