KAPONGA.
(From Our Own Correspondent.)
We are still getting summer weather and the roads arc suffering in consequence. The Road Board's grader has done; a great deal of work in tho way of side tracks on the Manaia road. It is a pity something could not be done to tue lower Palmer road side tracks. I notice tho loose ston<*s have been raked off, but in some places it is all loose stones and nothing but rebuilding will do any good. • At t"e Kapuni ford on the Skeet road there is a stump with a few ugly looking roots sticking almost in the centre of the ford. In daylight it is easy to clear it, but some dark night some unfortunate traveller coming down from the far side will come smash on it and it will mean a good horse hurt if nothing worse. It would not take a great deal of time or trouble to shift it. Tncre are still crowds of people visiting Dawson's Falls. The number 01 visitors are totalling near the 2000 expected this season.
Mrs Walker, of this town, was a very successful exluoitor at tne Normanby s>how, she having quite a pile- of blue cards. In to-night's Star you have tlie result of the'Stratlord Band Contest in as: — Stratford 1, Kaponga 2, Eltham 3. That was for the quickstep. The waltz competition ill the evening fell to Kaponga with 105 points, Stratford next with 88. This gave Kaponga a lead of two points in the aggregate. There was evidently a mistake in the judging of the quickstep. Tho judge's decision in Kaponga's case made out that they did thw 100 yards march in 154 stops instead of the regulation 120. The baiid have their scores marked where the 120 th pace comes, and they were only 0110 pace from the turning flag when they canu> to that place, so they could not have possibly taken ,134 stops. Besides, tho timekeeper gave them only the l-10tli of a second out in tlicir time, which proves there must have been an error somewhere. A protest was entered but when the result o! the waltz comp6tition was known and it was seen that Kaponga was top of the aggregate the protest was withdrawn. Kaponga, March 16.
