INFRINGEMENTS IN THE KING COUNTRY.

AUCKLAND, February 25. Thirteen prosecutions have just been concluded by the Crown, under the new Licensing Act, against persons dealing in liquor within the prohibited area of the King Country. The charges were heav 1 at Te Awamutu on Tuesday last, before Mr W. M. Xorthcroft, S.M., Mr S. Mays representing the Crown. C. L. Innes, of Hamilton, brewer, wi> convicted and ordered to pay £5 16s 4fl costs for sending to persons residing in the prohibited area a barrel of beer which did not bear a statement on the outside that it contained liquor. Mr McDiarmid. for the defence in this case, contended that the ordinary beer duty stamp was compliance with the Act, but this was overruled by the Magistrate. Frederick Plier was convicted and fined £5 and costs for taking from Te Awamutu to Te Kuit' a portmanteau containing liquor, without the portmanteau bearing a label to that effect on the outside. A. Walsh was convicted and fined £3 and £7 0s 8d costs for taking a hamper containing eight dozen bottles of beer from Mangapuhi to Tiroa without a similar label on the outside of the hamper. John Percival Laurie was fined £3 and costs for sending three barrels of beer to Taumaranui without labels; and on a charge of sending liquor to Taumaranui, which he had reasonable grounds to suspect was intended to be sold within the prohibited area, he was also fined £5 and costs.

At the termination of tho cases the Magistrate warned aIJ persons concerned in tlie liquor traffic against the use of consignment notes containing fictitious nanies>. and against dealing with reputed sly grog sellers.
