HAWERA DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL

The "breaking-np" of the above scboo 1 was celebrated by a concert on Friday afternoon. The spacious school hall wn a most inspiring sight, with its hundred, of happy fresh young lives so full of map; i niftcent possibilities. There was a fail , sprinkling of "obfldran of bigger growth" present. M* Sargent, Chairman of the School Committee, presided. Most en , joyable items were contributed by the scholars, the little dots coming in for much applause. The Hutchens Family rendered some very pretty selections on the bells, the audience demanding an encore. The Headmaster (Mr Strack), in reviewing the work of the year, said that the school was now realising the expectations of its friends some few years ago. It supplied the link between the elementary school and the university. It had all the appliances of an up-to-date modern school — kindergarten art, science, swimming, carpentry, and cookery, etc. Military . classes were in full swing in addition to the ordinary classes necessary for the imparting of a sound and sensible education. Much success had been achieved by the scholars .during the year. Girls and boys had done themselves credit on the athletic field, and they had carried off first prize for drill. Literary honors had come to the school also. The scholars had worked as well as played ; five senior scholars having passed the pupil teachers' examinations—^Masters Spratt and Bobbins, | and Misses Bamford, Rogers, and Dowi ling, while Master Frank Hutchens had won a junior scholarship valued at £40 a year for three years, and two town and two country pupils had gained science scholarships. These results were the outcome of intelligence and diligence on the part of the scholars, and the faithful and painstaking work of the teachers. The moral tone' of the school was high. As headmaster he was proud of his staff, and also of his scholars. Mr E. Dixon, as a member of the Education Board congratulated the scholars and the staff on the excellent working and the good success of the' school during the year. He hoped that a larger number would qualify for the scholarship examination next year. He urged the committee to approach the Minister of Education with a view to obtaining the £40 won by Master Frank Hutchens, so that it might be available to assist him in his musical studies to be taken up shortly in London. He congratulated Leo. Spratt, Geo. Strack, Cyril Bates, and Fred Mills on having won science scholarships. Mr Sargent expressed his and the committee's great pleasure at the equipment and prosperity of the school, and also read the names of the scholars who had won certificates daring the year. Mr Strack then told the audience that Master Frank Hutchens would be leaving for London early in the New Year. He predicted that he would make a name for himself in the musical world. While he had given so much attention to music, he had not neglected his ordinary studies, and always took a high place in his classes. He was glad that Master Frank did not suffer from swelled head, and was a true boy. a He had great pleasure in presenting him with a purse containing 5 guineas as a gift from the school toward the cost of his musical studies in England. Three hearty cheers were then given for Hawera's young musician, and the visitors proceeded to sample the work of the girls' cookery class. Witch's Oil for rheumatism, lumbago, sciatica, all -deep-seated muscular or rheumatic pains. — Advt.
