SPORTS AND PASTIMES.

CRICKET.

MIDLANDS v. PHOENIX.

Under very adverse conditions these teams met in the first round. The wicket was sodden, and rain ' fell during the early part of the afternoon. The game ended in a very hollow victory for Phoe-> nix. Midlands, batting first, could do very- little with the bowling of McCarthy and Nicholson, and were all out for 18. McCarthy secured the great average of four wickets for 3 runs, and Nicholson came out well with 3 for 10. Phoenix made a good stand, and put 108 on the score-sheet before the last wicket fell. McCarthy played a good innings for 40, A'Court 17, Nicholson and Turnbull 12 each also batted well. O'Callaghan bowled excellently, and his average, 7 for 42, is distinctly good considering the number of runs scored. Midlands im their second attempt fared better, but , could not make up the number required to save an innings defeat. They totted up 68, and were consequently beaten by an innings and 22 runs. Tissiman put up 32 and Pratt 20 (not out). Bobbins, Norton, A'Court, and Nicholson secured wickets.

MANAIA v. ELTHAM. The former team journey to Eltham on Wednesday, and played the local club on Taumata Park. An interesting game resulted in a win for Eltham by 10 runs on the first innings. Eltham started badly, Glasgow being caught out for one run, but Davis 16, Harrison 14, and Bailey 9 came to the rescue, and the innings closed for 57. Foran (4 wickets), Prince (4 wickets), and Gorringe (2 wickets) divided the bowling honors. Manaia could only put up 47, and of these Nolan scored 25 and Gorringe 11. Glasgow secured six wickets for 23 and Bailey three for 24. At call of time Eltham in their second innings had scored 99 for the loss of three wickets, Glasgow 40 not out, and Davis 48.

KAPOXGA v. NORMANBY.

The above match was played at Kaponga on Wednesday. The weather was anything but cricketing weather, a fine ram falling most of the day, making things very sloppy, some of the fielders getting in some fine gymnastics in their efforts to secure the ball. The home team scored a decisive win, the scores being Kaponga 112, Normanby 21. For Kaponga Cole scored 19, Dr Maclagan 23, Young 17, Mathieson 16, and Eccleston 11. L. Cole and Stewart were Normanby's successful bowlers. Normanby triade a very poor showing against the bowling of Weir and W. Cole, uf their score of 21 L. Cole and Meredith got 5 each. W. Cole secured 5 wickets for 10 runs, and Weir four for 8.
