POLICE COURT. Before Messrs W. H. Me Garry and E. Parrot, J.P.s, a lad named Arthur Butler was charged with stealing certain bicycle sundries, to tho value of 30s, the property of another lad, W. J. Ramsay. Accused pleaded guilty, although he had denied the charge to the police. Fined £1 and ' costs.
BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The adjourned meeting resumed in the Council Chambers (Cr Uo^dio in the chair), {or the purpose of considering estimates for street repairi. The estimated cost of work considered absolutely necessary by a committee of ' the whole- Council Amounted to £6800. Councillor Boddie moved the adoption of the report, pointing out that when all the street* ana footpaths were in a good atato of repair, the money that was at present spent in patching up would about pay the interest on £5000. The motion was seconded by Cr Hardy. Councillor Dive thought that tho report ought to be gone orer again by a special committee. Councillor Wilkinson agreed. He went into the financial aspect, and was of opinion that the matter ought to be dealt with by a committee before being put be- ; lore the ratepayers. The report was adopted. At this stage the Mayor joined the I meeting, and took v t he chair. Councillor Wilkinson moved that thofollowing items be added to tho estimates : Fire Brigade £500, Town Hall £110. County Council for bridge £800, Council Boards £230, total £1040.— Seconded by Cr. Hardy, and after discussion carried. Footpath on Castle N streot, .footpath to bowling-green, and 7J per cent for contingencies were also agreed to by the Council. . ... Councillor Wilkinson moved that the whole scheme be now left in the hands or the Finance Committee to report to special meeting of the Council with a view to getting the matter put before the rateSyers at an early date.— Seconded by Cr ni and carried. In reference to a letter from Mr Findlay, asking for certain metalling, it was resolved that the Council could not see their way to take any action. Art informal discussion re the disposal of manual fire engine took place, and it was resolved that the matter be left in the hands of the Fire Brigade Committee. A letter was received from the poundkeeper, asking for a hearing in reference to the charges made against him.—Resolved, That he be heard at next ordinary meeting of Council. The meeting then adjourned.
