In Committee of Supply, on the Lands and Survey Department estimates, Mr Kirkbride moved to reduce the item, "Eradication of noxious weeds, £3000," by £1, as an indication that money should be spent eradicating weeds on Crown lands. He laid £2000 was voted last session, and only £1021 expended. . ... The Minister for Lands said there was not a single complaint that had not been attended to, and he had spent all the money the Government could spend with profit in the eradication of weeds. After a discussion lasting an hour and 20 minutes, a motion for tire reduction of the vot© was negatived by 33 to 14. Mr KirkbiSd* then moved a. redufr tion of £1 in the item, "Fees to members of Waste Lands Boards, £1800," as an indication that the Government should introduce legislation to give greater discretionary powers to the Boards in dealing with Crown tenants. After oonaidieifcbte debate, Mr Kirkbride withdrew the motion, on the Minister giving an assurance that the Premier would bring in a bill which would give members an opportunity of further discussing the question. Mr xtemington moved to strike out the item "Subsidy for steamer service, Wan•ganui Biver, £350," as the service was not giving satisfaction to the settlers. Mr Willis defended the steamer oomnany, and said it was unfair to condemn itunheard. There had not been a single complaint made to the Government respecting the service. Mr Seddon said there must be no repudiation on the part of the Government, but it wa» tli© duty of the Government to cancel the conract if it were fully proved that Uatrick and Co. were breaking the contract. He defended the service, however, and stated that the settlers, as far as the Government were aware, wew quit© satisfied with the charges made by the company. The Government could say there liad been no breach of contract. He explained that tto Land Department had been drawn into tn© contract in order to afford facilities to settlers and goods betng got on to the land. Eventually Mr Remington's motion was lost by 37 to 24, and the total Departmental vote was agroed to. The State FowsU vote, £27,658, was passed without dtomaion Valuation Department, £28.068-- , In reply to Mr Mattey, Mr Mills said th© question of the appointment of a successor to Mr John McGowan was now under th© consideration of the Cabinet. The advisability of dividing the various offices held by that officer was also being fcricbrid* urged that the constitmtion of the Assessment Courts should t» mfoed. and that local bodies should jha«* on the bench. Mr Mais said th© Government was consulting *itfc the local bodies on the ques4 ion The total vrt* was agreed to. Th© Government Advances to Settlers Office management account, £109,778, iifas agreed to.
