NORMANBY.

(From Oar Own Correspondent.)

A meeting was held at the Commercial Hotel on Thursday evening to consider what steps should be taken to assist the Paine family in connection with their loss owing to the late fire. Mr F. S. Canning was voted to the chair, and remarked that it was a sad case, as the family had been left without anything more than the clothes they stood in. In fact, all had been swept away, and it was for those present to say what should bo done in the matter. The meeting having spent some time in going into the matter, it was proposed by Mr R. P. Clarkson, seconded by Mr R. Garden, and carried, That a subscription list be opened, all subscriptions to be paid into the hands of a committee to be appointed, and to be spent by them as far as necessary for the absolute maintenance of the family. The following gentlemen were appointed as a committee : Messrs Canning, C. Clarkson, Coekerton, Clarke, and Mantle. It was resolved that all monies received by the Hawera Star, or from other sources, be handed over to the committee appointed. Mr Canning moved, That Messrs Shrimpton, Bear Bros., Webley, Andrews, Mcllroy, Mantle, Clarke, Garden, Rowan, and Coekerton, he requested to obtain subscriptions in aid of the fund. Seconded by Mr Clarke and carried. * A vote of thanks to the Chairman closed the meeting. Tho Hawera Star and also Mr A. Clarke (Palace car) will be pleased to receive subscriptions on behalf of the fund from Hawera sympathisers.
