HAWERA BOROUGH ABBATOIR.

THE YBAIfS OPERATIONS.

A report presented to the Borough Council on Wednesday evening gave figures disclosing the operations that had been carried on at the Borough abattoir during the year, the first of its existence. There were 872 cattle slaughtered, and of these 11 were wholly condemned, and 33 partially. The number of pigs put through was 456, 8 of which were wholly condemned and 23 partially. No fewer than 3245 sheep were killed, or which 3 were wholly and 1 partially condemned. There were also 500 lambs (1 condemned). Fifteen calves were killed, all free from disease, and 310 tripes were cleaned. The slaughtering fees amountd to £501 8s 9d, rent of paddocks £53 10s, c«sli payments £4 12s 3d, total £559 Us. The average age of cattle slaughtered was 3.6 years, and the total weight 272 tons, Bcwts, 2qrs, 21 bs. The heaviest beast weighed (hot) 1391 lbs, the heaviest pig (cold) 4071b5, sheep (cold) 1381 bs. On account of private people 4 cattle, 35 pigs and 1 lamb were killed, and 2 tripes cleaned. Figures presented by the Town Clerk | showed that the receipts for the year (£559 15s) had been expended in working expenses, and the payment of eight months' interest on the abattoir loan.

The Major referred to the number of stock condemned, and said _he would go in for lamb (only one having been condemned) all the year round. Cr Whittaker said he thought if a beast was partially condemned it should be wholly condemned. Referring to the financial position the Mayor pointed out that on the year's working there was a loss of about £30, but all the paddocks had not been let at the prices that they had expected. It was for the Council to consider whether there was likely to be an increase in the number of stock slaughtered before deciding as to whether the fees or paddock rentals should be increased.

Cr Hirst : ]t is all the same ; the rate payers will have, to pay for it. The report was adopted.
