The Australasian Amateur Boxing Championships, under the auspices of the New Zealand Boxing Association, were begun to-night in the presence of a very targe audience. The boxing throughout was as good as ever seen here, the Australian visitors creating a particularly favorable impression. The only championship decided was the Middle-weight, in which, owing to two withdrawals, J. M. Griffin (N.Z.) and G. Graham (N.S.W.) were the only candidates, the New Zealander winning. Following arc the details : — Middle-weight Championship. — J. M. Griffin (N.Z.), list 3Jlb, met G. Graham (N.S.W.), list 31b. Griffin at once assumed the aggressive, hitting with tremendous fore*, and knocked Graham down three times in the first round. The latter was very plucky, and took a lot of punishment, replying effectively once or twice. The referee stopped the bout in the third round, awarding the championship to Griffin. Light-weight Championship. — First round : J. Bagley (Queensland), 9st 13Jlb, met T. Richards (N.Z.J, 9st 71b. Bagley did the leading throughout, Richards apparently waiting for a knock-out, but the Queensiander snowed excellent defence, and was awarded a win. D. Parbury (N.S.W).. 9st 101b. met F. Hurcon.be (N.Z.) 9st 1311b. The bout was characterised by continuous wrestling throughout, tlurcombe invariably clinching to avoid punishment. Parbury had the bettor of the exchanges ail through, and won. Feather-weight Championship. — First round: J. Dowridge (Queensland), Bst 131b, met C. Griffin (N.Z.), Bat 1311b. Dowridge showed a wonderful knowledge of taxing, giving an almost perfect display, while nis opponent hit wildly. He was at Dowridge's mercy early in" the second round-, and- the referee stopped the bout, his decision going to the Queenslander. W. Tobin (N.Z.), Bst ll^lb, met A. Thompson (N.Z.), Bst 121b. The bout was *a mill, devoid of boxing, and Thompson having the better all through proved the winner. In the novice competition, first rounds A. McConnell beat G. W,* Salt; E. W. Morsley beat F.« MiUa; R. Goodman .beat B. Granger; and, Glajk beat A. Sipthorpe. The tournament will be continued on Thursday.
