KING EDWARD PARK CARNIVAL.
The four days' carnival promoted by the King Edward Park Committee begins to-morrow. The opening day has the advantage of a treble attraction— the official opening of the commemoration gates, the fancy football match, and th» represente; tive practice football match, Taranaki reps. v. Southern Districts. The function is to be preceded by a procession, headed by the Borough Band, which will leave the Council Chambers at 1.45 p.m. for the Park. Arrived there, the Mayor, assisted by other prominent townsmen, will perform the ceremony of opening the new gates. This function will be brief, and should not occupy more than fifteen minutes. The fancy football match will then be played, and be followed by the rep. game. In the evening the first of four nights' entertainments will be given in the Opera House. The programme, published in full in another column, includes instrumental and vocal items and a number of fancy dances under the leadership of Miss Putnam. The programme comprises nineteen items, which, however, have the merit of brevity, and should thoroughly interest without tiring the audience. The second night's entertainment is under special preparation by a committeeof Hawera ladies, and will consist of vocal and instrumental items and elaborate tableaux. For the third and fourth nights entertainments of a similar character are being arranged, changes, of course, being intro- ! duced. Amongst other artistes Miss Tansley, of Dannevirke, will sipg. ' The object of the Larnival is to raise funds to be devoted towards beautifying the Park, and tho committee are sparing no effort to provide a public plsasure resort that will in every way be worthy of Hawera. Considerable expense has been incurred in preparing the Carnival, and as the Park when completed will be a decided acquisition to the town it is hoped that the efforts of th© committee i will be generously resporded to by the . public.
