HARD TIMES
(Received July 20, 9.36 a.m.) MELBOURNE, July 20. ; A long debate ensued on Mr Mauger's motion calling attention to prevailing distress, asking the Government to take steps to alleviate it by providing public works, and suggesting the reopening of the tariff question with a view to fostering industries. Mr Watson admitted there was a large amount of distress, but the tariff could not be reopened just now as there was insufficient evidence to show that a revision should take place. He proposed to deal with the public works proposals directly after the delivery of the budget.
