JAPANESE LOSE THEIR FIRST
WAR VESSEL.
Received 14, 8.12 a.m. , LONDON, May 13. Japan ' declares that the Port Arthur train did not bear a sign of the Red Cross. ( Soldiers in the train fired on the Japanese who replied. The train halted and hoisted the Red Cross flag and the Japanese then ceased firing, but the; train escaped. Received 14, 8.50 a.m. I.PNDON, May 13.
An officer stationed at Port Arthur asserts that it is impregnable and would welcome a seige. A triple row of forts are fronted by a moat guarded with barbed wire entanglements and there are bomb proof shelters behind the batteries. The officer adds that the officer in charge declined reinforcements, fearing an epidemic from over-crowding. Supplies are abundant.
Reuter's agency at Tokio reports that the Japanese torpedoer No. 48 was destroyed ott Thursday in Kerr Bay, north of Taliemvan, while retnovlng 1 mines. Seven were killed and seven wounded. This is the first Japanese war vessel that has been lost.
