A. NARROW ESCAPE.
NAPIER, January 9. A natrow escape from a serious railway accident occurred this evening as the 5 0 clock train from Hastings was approaching Naprer. When nearing the first crossing on the White road fvn express driven by a man named Maroney, who was accompanied by his son, was crossing tne line to Wellesley roaH, - and apparently not hearing the whistle or seeing •the train (the setting sun being full 'n hus eyes), the engine ,was upon the express before he was aware of its proximity. The erifeine struck the back portion of the vehicle, causing it to turn a complete somersault, but fortunately throwing the occupants quite clear.. The express was completely smashed, and the lad Maroney severely bruised about the face, but, strange to say, very little damage was done either to the driver of the express or' the horse. No blame abtaches to any- of the train officials," as the engine whistled twice before it struck.
