In the last annual report of the Ontario Agricultural Experimental Union, an interesting account is given of a Beries of experiments carried out in various parts of Canada during last year, wiih the object of testing the merits oi various dressings as preventatives oi smut in oats. In the result it was found that bes 1 ; results were obtained with a solution of formalin, in which the grain was steeped for twenty minutes. In the case of the crop of which the seed was thus treated, it was found that there was an average of only two emutttd heads in euch of the plots, whereas where the same seed was sown without any treatment the number of smutted heads averaged 360 per plot. Where the sued was sptinkied wi'h sulphate of copper (blue stone) before being sown, the average number of smutted heads wa3 65, and where the seed was immersed for twelve hours in a solution of blue stone the proportion of smutted beads wus reduced to 40 per plot. In making (he solution of formalin, half a pint of ordinary commercial formalin, as sold by chemists, was dissolved in 25 gallons of water, and the seed contained in convenient, sized sacks, iin-mer,--ed in the solution for twenty minutes, and then ppread out on a clean floqr to dry.

It was found that immersing the eeed in the solution of formalin was much aiore effective than sprinkling the grain with )he same preparation. Some of the advanrages of the formalin are, that it is more penetrating than blue atone, yet at the same time less iojurious to tba seed. It is found that \vh«-n the blue stone is used, some of the less vigorous 89tdshave their germination soiufewhat impaired, if not altogether d-sroyed, by tbe treatment.

Another point in favour of the formalin is- that it can be used without any Hanger or risk to thosp by whom it is handled, as it hns no effect upon the hands. At the meeting at which tho results of this Canadian experiment were Announced, one of the members present snid : " I have been Iroubled a great deal wi'h smut in oats, ai.d last >ear I determined to try something to prevent i - . I trented 25 bushels of ottts wiih 4oz of formalin in 12 gallons of water, and the result was ihat I had not a single smutled head in the whole crop. I did not immeise the outs; I just tntrely sprinkled the foinrilin solution over it with a watering por. My experience is that it does no^hurt to keep seed tieated in this manner. The disagrcenbleness of handling bluestone is quite enough sgaimi it."

The following letter, which speaks for itself, appeared in a leoont issue of the Scotihli Farmer : —

If my metnoryji reliable, according to reports, the standard has not raised the qualify of the milk to the users in Glasgow. It is tho cause of much friction ; analys s do not ngreo, and cowsj rmik are not all alike, etc. Would it nat, be Letter to make a standard for something else say the price of milk, for exnaiple ? I think it is quite toi> cheap. Other things coi'Sidered, wh.sky, for instance, sold at 8d a gill — and pure milk Then the publicans do not give credit, as I understand they cannot sue for debt. Dairymen have to credit all round, or they tn».y shut i-hop and stay in with ihe vim. A .shopkeeper can liy in bed to üboul eight o'clock in the morning, and thereafter has coat and collar ou and i 3 under cover all day. Dairymen, their wives, and assistants have to be up at from three to five in tho morning, and out with the van in all weather?, and, in this age. Sabbath included, selling — selling the rest of the body and tlia salvation of the soul — for what? Is if. to make money, or a bare living ? Judging from the failures ia the atteiupf, we may conclude tho latter. Will respect to a standord, I cannot t,ee where it is required. The u<ers are qui.e capable judges.' I once kaew a man who started to do a ' good thing " in the milk trude. The third morning ha went seven miles and sold 2^d worth. That did him. I knew siuotlitr who started with big meisure, and gave credit freely. He 100k the town, and I had 10 leave it. A short time did him, too, and he paid his creditors with " a composition." My milk was once sampled when one of my boys was out with tho van, and ona of my cus-omers gave the officer a good scolding, telling hm he had lit le to do anno.U' g the lad when hU faihi r was )il, and that no ona was complaining of my mtlk, etc. Mo reply wns sent in of said sample, and •I understand no one gfis a reply if iheir milk i% up to or over tne stanuaid. Now, I do not think that is right, for if it is wrong to the user to get milk under the 1 standaid, io is wrong to tho seller tj sell over tbe standaid.- He ought to b9 recompensed out of ihe exchequer. The standard may or may not n-main, but this is t*ute : no c-ne can nbideby it. This has been proved, acco ding to the diversity of the returns of the analysts. I j think the standard should be abolished, and th« samjjiing officers converted into sheriff offictr j , to co-lect the d j b sof the dairymen. Tney would be rcq' ircd to call round every alternate Tuetday, ai d get tbe n limes of those who had not paid thtic account,, and, if th(-y could, uplift tho money at, say, lOd lor Is debt' I would give most of mine for half price. They, would make a good living, and bave the authorities an amount of worry and expensr. Union is required to bring about satisfactory reeulis, and it is to be hoped that in the near fuiura there will be a universal combine in the dairy fanning community. Heady cash would be of great benefit, but it is absurd to think one person may start alone. The removal of tha law would bs a btimulus in that direction.

WE give away nothing for nothing, not even a pound of tea. We keep a good article and charge a fair' price for it. Seeing how much better value relatively is given in the Massey-Harris Bicycle than in any other make, the former is, literally, dirt cheap at the price. So, say all of those who know. Cole and Donnelly say so, too. TAPANESE Crockery at Smith's t) Best variety. > *
