LICENSING COMMITTEE.
Tho quarterly "meeting of th© EGawora Licensing Committee was held on Wednesday Present-H. Eyre-Kenny, Esq., S.M., Messrs J. R. Stewart, Davidson J. E. Wilson, W. Bowo. James D. Bashford applied for a renewal of a license for the Commercial Hotel, Monaia. Mr Bennett appeared for the applicant. The case had been udjoiurned from a previous sitting' to enable certain improvements to be carried out.
Cfotista'ble Carroll reported that a good many improvements had been made.
The applicant, sworn, said that, in <acoordance with the directions of' the Committee, he obtained a copy of Mr Russell's report and g-ave it to a carpenter to carry out. He knew that all the work had been carried out. The chairman said they had no definite evidence as to whether the work had been done properly nor yet whether good tini'ber had been used. *• Mr Welsh appeared for tho owner.© of the house and- asked the Bench to appoint some expert to. say whether Mr Bashford had carried but Mr Russell's instructions, wthiph, if carried put, would make tho tio«use good for many j'oars to come.
Mr Bennett said it was his mistake that he had not agked the Bench how the work was to bo carried out. If he had made an error of judgment in not obtaining Mr Rlussell to give evidence he would ask for an adjournment until the report was to hand. The Committee were unanimously of the opinion that the case should be adjourned until the 20th of January, 1904, when the licensee must produce a certificate that the repairs hay© been substantially effected in a workmanlike mtemier and apparently with suita'bjle material. A report from' Mr Russell or his partner would be sufficient. In- the event of the certificate not being forthcoming Mr Bashford's applioation ] would be finally refused. William Slattery also applied for a renewal. This application had also •been adjourned an the ground that a stable was too close to the hcotel. This, it was shown, had boen altered and the Comtay'ttee now granted the renewal. R. W. Manning /Jffr Welsh) applied for a renewal of a wine license. — Granted. R. W.
