HARSH AMERICAN LAW,
1 Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, December 9. Kenneth Harper, until recently clerk in the Bank of 2s ew Zealand, Dunedin, was brought back from the United States by the Sonoma. He informed an interviewer that in August last he was appointed to a position in a bank at San Francisco, but on arrival at 'Frisco he was stopped by a Customs official, who ' informed him that he was prohibited from landing by contract under the Labour Law. The bank unsuccessfully appealed to the Washington authorities, who refused to transfer him to their Vancouver- branch, and the Oceanic Company was required to bring him back to New Zealand free of charge. At Honolulu Harper was removed from the steamer, and, refusing to enter the prison van, was marched to gaol, and kept :n the detention yard with a large number of Chinese and Japanese prisoners until the time of the steamer's departure, when he was again placed on board.
