THE HAWERA ABATTOIRS.

THE MANAGER'S REPORT.

At the meeting of the Bcrough Council en Wednesday evening, ■ E. T. B. Worthy, inspector and manager of the abattoirs, reported having commenced killing stock at the abattoir.* on October 5, but stated that the butchers did not kill all their stock there until October 15. The returns for stock slaughtered during October were: — Cattle, 61 (2 wholly condemned); sheep, 214; lambs, 29; pigs, 12; tripes cleaned, 16. The fees due amounted to £31 15s 3d. Each butcher had rented a paddock. The heaviest beast killed during' the month was a heifer weighing 8761bs (hot), &nd the total weight of beasts (hot) killed for human consumption vras 41,48Ub5. Five per cent, of this weight would be lost in drying, for the meat "set" splendidly. The bokthorn plants had struck we'l, there being only 130 dead ones. All the offal was removed daily by Mi Barraclough. <

At first they had great difficulty in getting the hooking gtar to work proper! v, but now evaiything was working smooth Jy, and the slaughtermen were enabled to get through their work much quicker. The yards worked well, and no trouble was experienced in getting stock into the abattoirs.

He would make the following sugges lions:— (1) That a urinal be promptly erected at the abattoirs; (2) that some tanks be erected., so that they could have a reserve supply of water, for if the water was cut off all killing must cease ; (3) that the gates of each paddock be numbered; (4) that the yards be painted, so as to help to preserve them; (5) that a sheet of gal vanised iron be nailed on the front of each of the three sliding doors to save them from being stained deeply; (6) that all the projecting barbs in the cattle raco be bent back, so that there would be no danger of puncturing the hides. The report was received, and' tlia su^ gestLons were referred to the Abattoirs Committee for consideration.
