Lord Milner, replying at Johannesburg to. an ami-Asiatic deputation, said that whatever form legislation takes, the ' rights acquired before tbe war must be I * respected Indentured Asiatics might largely be wanted temporarily in the mines and for public work, but tbe country was Ptill a lung way off that, and it was not certain that Asiatics were prepared to come. Moreover, the Home Government would not allow the impor- ' tation if they believed the mass of the European .population was opposed to indentured Asiuticp. j Received June 7, 4.55 p.m. LONDON, June 6. ' The Bloemfoutein Customs Convention tariff is published. It cancels ad valorem duties on the following articles, Bubstitut- I ing fixed duties : Cattle 30s, sheep ss. I meats (including lard) ld per lb. All { these are suspended at present. Butter, * butterine, and margerine 2d per lb, condensed milk §d, coal 3s a ton, coke 2s, corn Is per cent, all flour 2s, fodder Is, fruits 2d per lb. •'■ The Convention grants the right to' levy an increased duty on sugar equal to tbe amount of- bounty allowed by any country outside the Brussels Convention. v Wines containing. 2o, per cent of spirit 4s a gallon, not exceeding 50 per cent Bs, sparkling wines 12s 6d plus 10 per nent ad valorem. A.. rebate of 25 per cent id allowed/. pn.' articles of growth, produce, and manufacture of thp United Kingdom, also the manufactures of the British colonies granting reciprocal privileges to tbe South African Onion. A draft of the ordinance providing for the Transvaal's entry into the Customs Union hiiß been read a first time in tbe Transvaal Legislature.
