LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL.
Tuesday, August 19.
The Council met at 2.30 p.m. A number of petitions were presented in favour of Bible reading in schools.
A motion was agreed to that in future appointments to the Hansard staff the Speaker of the Council should be consulted.
The debate on the motion by Hon. G. Jones, that the resolution of tbe Council with reference to the unsatisfactory condition of certain Wellington hotels be forwarded to the Government for their consideration, was resumed.
Hon. W. C. Walker said unless the Government abrogated powers of local bodies, they could not interfere in the matter. Hen. M. S. Grace considered the
reports were slightly coloured. Hon G. Jones contended the only way to reform the traffic was to abolish it, and he further urged that if the I traffic could be abolished in a single } community, it could be as effectively stopped in a nation. The motion was carried by 17 to 10. The Fisheries Conservation Bill was further considered in committee.
Hon. W. C. Walker proposed a new chaise giving private owners the right to fish in watocs running through their properties. Progress was reported to. enable members to consider the effect of the new clauses? The Council rose at 3.55 p.m.
