Dunbdin, July 24. At a meeting of the Fallen Soldiers Memorial Committee, it was decided to go on with the local memorial while public interest remained active. The Evening Star gave £50 to the Otago University, and has also opened a subscription list, and appealed for £450 within a week. Wellington, July 24. The Agent-General has cabled that tbe case of R. Bell (match manufacturer) v. the Commissioner of Customs, has been decided b^y tbe Privy Council in favour of the defendant, with costs. The case arose out of the seizure of goods by the Customs Department for an alleged breach of the Trade Marks Act, and in both the Supreme Court and the Court of Appexl judgment was given for the plaintiffs.
The resolutions passed at the emergency meeting of the Harbour Board on the 16th inst. to raise a quarter of a million for deck coustruotion were confirmed today by the Board by 4 votes to 3. The Board resolved to draft a by-law imposing a harbour improve* ment rate to be paid by vessels on all inward goods and transhipments discharged. The rate was fixed at 3d per ton on general goods and a proportionate amount on sundries ; for this purpose, 500 superficial feet of timber to be regarded as one ton. Palmerston N., July 24. The Borough Council to-night decided to submit to the ratepayers a drainage scheme, estimated to cost £35,000, but only £22,000 will be spent at present. DUNEDIN, July 24. John Laffey was fined £3 and costs 21s for failing to stamp a receipt for a huitj of £'60 6a Bd.
Ashbdrton, July 24. H. Crump was remanded to appear at Christchurch on three charges of forgery, and was committed for trial at the next sittings of the Supreme Court on two charges of forgery and uttering.
