The wicket was slow at first, but easier as play progressed. Tate, of Sussex, replaced Hirst, and Jones, Carter, and Howell were omitted from Australia. Darling won the toss, and Bent in Trumper and Duff, the bowling being entrusted to Rhodes and Jackson. Nine runs were scored in the first two overs, and within twenty-five minutes the board showed 42, the result of splendid hitting. Tate replaced Jackson at 49, but the' half century was hoisted at the end of twenty-seven, minutes. The batting of both was excellent, Duff keeping a slight lead of Trumper. At 60, when their respective records were Duff 81, Trumper 29, Braund went on in place of Rhodes. Tiumper completed his half century in fifty-two minutes, and had scored 51 to Duff's 49 when the total was 93. Tbe century appeared within an hour's play. At 96, Tate made way for Rhodes, but the changes wero unavailing, both bowlers being freely punished. At 119, Jackson was again tried, the scores then being — Trumper 66, Duff 52. At this point, Braund made a great effort to catch Duff in the slips, but the ball flew wide, and the fieldsman fell. Lockwood supplanted Braund at 129, and six runs later Duff was smartly caught by Lilley off Lockwood. The partnership lasted less than 80 minutes. Duff, for his 54, played a capitol innings, which included four fourers. One for 135. Hill succeeded, and the 150 was obtained by 90 minutes' play. At 156 Rhodes went on vice Jackson. Rhodes. His was a great innings ; it •lasted 110 minutes, and was unmarred by a single chance. Ik included fourteen fours, three threes, and six twos. Two for 175. Rhodes fell in making the catch, and Noble appealed, but tbe decision was against him. Three for 178. Hill had scored 16 when Gregory joined him. With three to his credit, he was caught by Lilley, wide on the off- side, off Rhodes. Four for 183. Rhodes had taken three wickets after luncheon, obtained in four overs for six runs. The half- century appeared opposite Hill's name when he had been 100 minutes at the wickets, and made a very fine display, in which there was only one bad stroke.
